The difficult thing about being a writer, poet,  journalist, or artist, is the fact that your respective art will never be your only job. It simply can't be! I know plenty of poor, talented artists (of multiple mediums) that are incredible at what they do but flop miserably when it comes to actually making money.
Still, these forms of expression are most important, and must be kept alive! Consider poetry, for example. How many new poets are out there?? Here's one:

Vito Acconci first became famous in NYC when he began editing for the journal 0 To 9 in the 1960s. Now, he speaks to vbs.tv in their series on new artists, appropriately dubbed "Art Talk." Watch dis!

And on the note of poetry, check out the homie Amaya's poetry blog. You won't be disappointed.

My favorite W.B. Yeats:

A COAT

I made my song a coat
Covered with embroideries
Out of old mythologies
From heel to throat;
But the fools caught it,
Wore it in the world's eyes
As though they'd wrought it.
Song, let them take it,
For there's more enterprise
In walking naked.
